The Sturmgeschütz IV was born out of necessity in late 1943, combining the proven superstructure of the successful StuG III assault gun with the reliable and more widely available Panzer IV chassis. This created a powerful and effective low-profile tank destroyer and infantry support weapon that was cheaper and faster to produce than traditional turreted tanks. Armed with a potent 75mm gun, the StuG IV served on all fronts until the end of the Second World War.
